Abbey of the Redwoods, an interfaith contemplative community, is physically located within the same walls of Grace Good Shepherd Church in McKinleyville, California. The Abbey was founded by Rev. Dr. Lynn Hubbard, one half of husband-and-wife pastoral team at Grace Good Shepherd.
Pastor Lynn holds a Doctorate of Ministry from Chicago Theological Seminary, with a specialization in Cross Cultural Ministry & Native American Theology. Between 2009-2014, Pastor Lynn worked on the Navajo reservation as the Executive Director of the Navajo Lutheran Mission, which he describes as “an attempt to build a post-colonial interfaith religious community.”
Lynn is a Philosopher of Religions and has taught many classes in Religion and Science, Comparative Religions, and Native American Spirituality.
Focusing on the study of religion and contemporary culture, the Abbey promotes interfaith understanding and respect through daily spiritual practices, retreats, conferences, and media presentations. We are as well a socially engaged community working to achieve peace, justice and equality.
We recognize, honor and respect the Wiyot Peoples as the traditional stewards of the lands on which the Abbey is now present. We honor the Wiyot and other Indigenous caretakers of these lands and waters, the elders who lived here before, the Indigenous today, and the generations to come.
